The Firefox phone OS promises to further entrench HTML5 web apps as the future of mobile apps. The operating system is entirely based on web standards and is a real alternative to Android or iOS. Now the rumours are confirmed, Bango has signed a deal to allow operator billing on Firefox Phones.
Billing via the carrier may be a super boost for Firefox phone. Instead of needing users to register credit card details with Firefox (as users do with Google / Apple) micropayments to buy apps etc will go via the operator.
The alternative billing mechanism will go in favour of the Firefox phone when we consider the emerging markets where credit cards are less prevalent.
The Firefox phone is tipped towards the next billion devices to be sold - a mid to low market device. The recent focus on HTML5 apps from Amazon will help the Firefox crusade. We may be witnessing the start of the next big shake up, over the next 5 to 10 years could we see true open standards take primary place on mobile? I do hope so!
Keep an eye out for the ZTE Firefox OS which is taking orders via ebay in UK and USA.
