I am massively excited about the Moto360 watch from Motorola (see pic). Its a round digital display which at first glance looks like a traditional watch with hands (so cool). It looks like an actual watch and runs Android Wear. This last part 'Wear' means Android apps can use the watch as a display and touch screen. This unleashes the creativity of developers and product managers to extend your connected life beyond your smartphone Apps onto to your wrist. But what will the cost be? I don't mean dollars.
Many people (me included) are so 'plugged in' to their connected life they are always on their smartphones checking something - their email, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, sports news, messages etc. Frequently you see people in a face to face conversation pause, look at their mobile, tap in a message, un-pause the conversation and carry on talking. This drives me crazy as it's like people taking phone calls while your talking to them, its rude, but it is becoming standard and acceptable. The connectivity addiction already distracts people to the extent they can not hold a face to face conversation without being distracted and their thoughts elsewhere.
Now imagine the mobile no longer just buzzes to inform its owner of a message, instead the watch buzzes and shows some of the message. The new challenge is going to be trying to ignore the start of the message on your wrist and continue the discussion. For many I expect that challenge will be too much. Early signs suggest alerts and messages on your wrist are impossible not to take a look or at least a glance at.
I have had various meetings with a Pebble watch owners. The Pebble is an early smart watch, its screen is one color and has no touch capabilities. Throughout meetings and even while taking phone calls, those wearing their Pebble look like their constantly checking the time. They are not, they are scanning what new message is incoming to them.
While I adore the gadgetry of the Moto360 I am worried. Do we actually need this level of connectivity. I fear in a typical every day use it won't improve anything about peoples lives? I hope I am wrong!
